This Privacy Policy describes how SMZD collects, uses and shares personal information when you use smzd.io, samizdat.app and related services, and explains your choices regarding that information.

For privacy questions or requests, contact support at samizdat dot app. SMZD is the controller of personal information processed for its own purposes. For information processed on behalf of site owners, the site owner is responsible for its use and applicable privacy notices.

Information we collect and use

• Account information. We process contact and profile information, such as your email address, name and profile image, to create and manage your account, enable collaboration and communicate with you about the service.
• Authentication and security. We process sign-in information, account identifiers, IP addresses and browser information to authenticate users and protect the service against unauthorized access and abuse. If you use a third-party sign-in service, we receive the information needed to connect and authenticate your account.
• Content. We process documents, revision history, comments, uploaded media, site settings and other content you provide to deliver the publishing, storage and collaboration features you use.
• Billing information. Payments are handled by our payment provider. We share account and contact information as needed to manage billing and receive transaction and subscription information. We do not receive your full payment card details.
• Published sites. We process visit information, such as pages viewed, approximate location, referral sources and device type, to provide site owners with readership statistics and identify automated traffic. We also process membership and newsletter details and form submissions on behalf of site owners.
• Technical information. We process diagnostic and error information to maintain, secure and improve the reliability of the service.

We do not use personal information for third-party advertising.

Optional features

When you use AI-assisted content or design features, your requests and relevant content are processed by service providers to deliver the requested functionality.

We do not use your content for AI training.

Google user data

If you choose to import from Google Docs, SMZD accesses the documents you select. SMZD's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Google Docs import

Importing a document creates a copy in SMZD for use within the service.

• Access is limited to the documents you select and authorize for import.
• Imported information may include document content, media, metadata, comments, suggestions and author display names.
• Google data is used only to provide and support the functionality you request.
• Access by personnel is limited to authorized support, security purposes or legal requirements.
• Google data is not sold, used for advertising or used for AI training. It is shared only with service providers as necessary to deliver the requested functionality.

Our legal basis

• Performance of a contract: managing your account, processing billing, communicating about the service and providing the features you request.
• Legitimate interests: maintaining service security and reliability, preventing abuse and providing readership statistics to site owners.
• Consent: where required, including for authorized Google Docs access. You may withdraw consent at any time through the relevant service's account settings.
• Legal obligations: processing required to comply with applicable legal and regulatory requirements, including payment and tax recordkeeping.

Sharing information

We share personal information with service providers as necessary to operate the service. These include providers of:

• Hosting, data storage and content delivery.
• Payment processing and subscription management.
• Authentication, security and diagnostic services.
• Email delivery and readership statistics.
• Content and design assistance, and integrations you choose to use.

Information is also shared with collaborators or made public according to your use of the service and sharing settings. We may disclose information where required by law or necessary to protect legal rights, safety or service security. We do not sell or rent personal information.

International processing

Personal information may be processed in the European Union, the United States and other countries where our service providers operate, including outside your country of residence. Data protection laws may differ between countries. Contact us for information about international processing.

Data retention

• Account information and content are retained as needed to provide the service while your account is active.
• Authentication and technical records are retained for periods appropriate to their security and operational purposes.
• Deleted documents may remain recoverable in Trash for up to 30 days unless you choose permanent deletion.
• Local copies and preferences may be stored on your device to support offline use and other service features.
• Payment and related records are retained as required by applicable law.

Your rights

Depending on applicable law, you may have rights to access, correct, export or delete your personal information, restrict or object to its processing, and withdraw consent where processing relies on consent. You can manage your information through the service or contact support at samizdat dot app for other privacy requests. We may need to verify your identity and will respond within the timeframes required by applicable law.

• Correction. Manage your profile information through your account settings.
• Export. Use the service's export tools to download your content and site data. Contact us for other personal information access requests.
• Deletion. You can delete content, sites and your account using the controls available in the app. Certain records may be retained where required by law.

You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority where applicable.

Cookies

We use essential cookies and similar technologies for authentication and service functionality.

• The app uses session cookies to maintain your sign-in.
• Published sites use session cookies when readers sign in.
• smzd.io does not set cookies.

The app also uses local storage for preferences and offline content. You can manage cookies and local storage through your browser settings; disabling them may affect service functionality.

Children

The service is not intended for children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under that age. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can take appropriate action.
